Are you looking for ways on how to make people wear a mask? Although the world is desperately waiting for COVID-19 vaccinations to put the pandemic to an end, it has become more or less mandatory worldwide to wear a mask to help deter viral transmission. While many people support wearing a mask and listen to public health advice, some rebels claim that they have been compelled to wear a mask against their will.
It is up to the person to determine whether or not to comply with mask-wearing and social distancing, but what determines compliance is not straightforward. Demographic variables have all been correlated with whether individuals want to wear a mask and social distance, such as income level, political affiliation, and gender.
Psychology, however, may go some way to explain why variations in behavior occur. Past research has shown that psychological variables such as the perception of risk and risky actions of a person affect adherence to health behaviors. In the present pandemic, this is now being observed.
One pre-print research (yet to be peer-reviewed) has shown that a higher tendency for risky decision-making goes hand in hand with being less likely to wear a mask properly or maintain social distance. Perceptions of the possibility of COVID-19 are cited in another piece of research as a driver of whether people decide to separate themselves socially.
And there may also be another psychological explanation: the’ psychological reactance’ phenomenon. This is where people vehemently assume that when this right is threatened, they have the freedom to do as they wish, and feel negative feelings, and so become driven to reinstate it.
This suggests that certain individuals may consider their behavioral independence to be under threat when ordered to wear a mask and social distance. Then, rage and other negative feelings follow. These people may then try to restore their independence by not agreeing with the advice in order to minimize these unpleasant feelings.

The potential problem of psychological reactance has been discussed since early on in the pandemic and is now being investigated specifically regarding masks and how to make people wear a mask.
