Symptoms of Social Anxiety

While it is debatable how helpful it is to mark yourself as having a “disorder,” the following guidelines (as stated on the website of the Social Anxiety Institute) are based on a diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder:

  1. A recurrent fear of one or more social or performance conditions in which the person is exposed to unknown individuals or to other people’s potential scrutiny. The person fears that he or she will behave in a way that will be awkward and humiliating (or show symptoms of anxiety).
  2. Exposure to the alleged situation almost always induces distress, which can take the form of a panic attack that is situationally bound or situationally predisposed.
  3. The person agrees that this fear is irrational or excessive.
  4. The dreaded conditions are avoided or are endured with extreme anxiety and depression.
  5. In the dreaded social or performance situation(s), avoidance, nervous anticipation, or discomfort significantly interferes with the daily routine, occupational (academic functioning, or social activities or relationships of the individual, or there is marked distress about having the phobia.
  6. There is chronic apprehension, anxiety, or avoidance, usually lasting 6 or more months.
  7. Fear or avoidance is not due to a substance’s immediate physiological effects (e.g., narcotics, drugs) or a general medical illness that is not best compensated for by another psychiatric disorder…
