Psychological Assessment

A List of Tests and Assessments to Diagnose Mental Health Disorders

The method of assessing and interpreting psychological constructs such as personality, intelligence and behaviour is psychological or psychometric evaluation. This is achieved using psychometric measures that are scientifically designed and validated instruments to determine the relevant area of interest. The normal aims of psychological evaluation are to include a treatment setting diagnosis; to determine a specific area of functioning or impairment often for school settings; to assist in determining method of treatment or measuring treatment outcomes; or to assist in evaluating work candidates or workers and offering career development counselling or training.

There are several broad types of psychological assessments, among which we perform personality evaluation mainly.

Personality Tests:

Tests on Personality:

Personality is a pattern of thinking, actions and feelings that over time and circumstances, remains relatively stable. Personality is distinctive to each person and special to them. Personality assessments attempt to assess individual attributes or personality as a whole. They assist in recognizing the usual ways in which the person responds to different circumstances or deals with them. They assist with the diagnosis of psychiatric conditions and the recognition of emotional issues. Personality psychological assessments are also classified as either objective tests or projective tests.

Self-report inventories are typically objective personality checks. Paper-and-pen assessments that enable individuals to answer questions about their typical actions are self-report inventories. Objective assessments are very organized questionnaires that include several choices and questions that are true or false.

Multidisciplinary Assessment:

Of course, it may be helpful to use medical practitioners (e.g., psychiatrists, neurologists, and other doctors) and psychologists to assess the exact nature of the problem posed. However, in many situations, in order to build an image of the entire individual, it is necessary to expand the range of evaluation services. The evaluation process can be widened by using evaluation methods and practitioners from other disciplines. Professionals that could be used include:

  • In order to assess functional conditions, speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists
  • Social workers, case managers and experts in vocational rehabilitation for lifestyle and functional problems
  • Other professionals, such as audiologists, other medical experts, spiritual and religious factors, etc.

Intelligence tests:

These are used to rate the individual’s level of overall intellect compared to others in their peer group. Intelligence tests are important in determining various cognitive strengths and weaknesses in individuals that may be associated with certain types of mental health disorders. There are a number of different formal intelligence tests. The most utilized intelligence tests are the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. These tests are separately developed for both adults and children, and give a number of different IQ scores (intelligence quotient scores) for different intellectual domains (e.g., full scale IQ, verbal IQ, nonverbal IQ, and so forth).

Neuropsychological tests:

In Neuropsychological tests Specialized experiments are performed by psychologists specialized in relationships with brain behavior (neuropsychologists). The existence of cognitive abilities and deficiencies that may be the product of brain injury, a psychiatric disorder, a neurological disorder, or a developmental disorder can be determined using these measures. To cover these domains, there are literally thousands of different neuropsychological examinations which can be performed. In general, neuropsychological functioning includes topics such as intelligence, language skills (expressive and receptive language abilities), attention, learning and memory, visual vision, planning and judgement, abstract thought, motor functioning, personality, and other areas of psychology.

A variety of other measures are explicitly intended to measure aspects of the mood of an individual (e.g., the presence of depression), other emotional states and psychological states, such as the presence of anxiety or psychosis, and to measure the adaptive abilities of a person.

Physical and Laboratory Testing:

A significant part of the evaluation process is to ensure that the person has complete physical work to rule out any physical causes/associations that could be relevant to the psychological problem presented. While no laboratory or diagnostic testing can ascertain the existence of the vast majority of psychological or psychiatric disorders, there are a variety of physical conditions and illnesses that are either very similar to certain psychological disorders or that cause side effects similar to the symptoms of certain psychological disorders.

  • There are a variety of various physical and laboratory techniques available. In identifying mental health problems, some of the most important ones include the following:
  • A complete physical evaluation administered by a physician may help to identify any physical conditions that can lead to symptoms.
  • In identifying particular kinds of neurological conditions that might be presented as psychological problems, neurological tests are useful. Usually, neurological tests include such methods as neuroimaging and psychophysiological evaluation.
